Veron ruled out as Man United build-up begins
Friday, Nov 28, 2003
Claudio Ranieri this afternoon talked of his respect for this Sunday’s
opponents and their manager but first he revealed that one Manchester United
old boy would not be fit to face his former team.
Juan Sebastian Veron’s back injury has not healed sufficiently to bring
him back into contention for the big Premiership clash at Stamford Bridge
although the Chelsea head coach did say he may be available for the games next
week.
Veron joins long-term knee injury casualty Emmanuel Petit and Robert Huth,
who is away with Germany Under 20s, as the only members of his squad not in
contention to face the champions.
Claudio moved on to say how much he was relishing the opportunity to
gauge Chelsea’s progress this season.
“It’s a chance to compare how big is the gap,” he said. “I’m sure
there is a gap because they are champions since a long time ago and in Europe,
the last seven or eight years in the Champions League they have arrived at the
minimum in the quarter-final.
“I think the gap is closing but you cannot compare at this moment
Manchester United and Chelsea. Chelsea were born now, this season.
“When I was a child, the teams from England were always Manchester United
, Liverpool and Tottenham. These are the big teams I remember.
“Now I think a lot of people around the world know Chelsea but the gap is
still there because Chelsea have arrived just once in the Champions League
quarter-final, against Barcelona.”
Claudio was then asked for some opinions on Alex Ferguson and whether he
had been pleased a couple of years back when the Man United boss announced his
intention to remove himself as competition through retirement.
“I didn’t believe it,” he replied. “When I watch him, he transmits
enthusiasm and love about his work. It is difficult when a man is working well
, with love and passion, to finish. Why? Maybe if he has another interest but
I didn’t believe it.
ꄛ It is important to work everyday with the young players. You feel young.
“I think his mentality is in the Manchester United team. Roy Keane is
another big expression of his mentality. Ferguson is Manchester United, Roy
Keane is Manchester United.
“It is the same link, the same idea. Roy Keane is Alex Ferguson as a
player.”
The natural follow-up question was just how much of Claudio Ranieri’s
mentality is in the current Chelsea team and whether we have any equivalent of
Keane in terms of representing that mentality in the side.
“Alex Ferguson has been at Manchester United I think 17 years. That is
the difference. Repeat this question in 17 years. Maybe I see the players
could be John Terry and Frank Lampard because they are young.”
Then it was back to Man United and whether they had made mistakes in
selling the likes of Beckham and Veron in the summer.
“I am used to seeing this in football,” Claudio replied. “I remember
when Juventus sold Baggio, Vialli, Casiraghi, Ravanelli and they continued to
win. That’s football, it’s fantastic!
“We have a lot of respect for Manchester United. I’m sure we will play
a good match on Sunday with a lot of respect face to face,” he concluded.
