Duff fancies tussling with man he respects
Sunday, Nov 30, 2003
If Damien Duff plays at the front of the midfield diamond today, as he has
recently, and Roy Keane is fit, then Chelsea’s record signing will come into
direct confrontation with a controversial fellow countryman whom he hugely
admires.
“I haven’t really looked that far ahead, but yes, I suppose so,”
admitted Damien at the training ground this week as he spoke to Chelsea TV.
“Firstly I just want to play. With the squad we have here, God knows
where you’ll be on a Saturday or a Sunday. Firstly I just want to play, and
wherever I play, I just want to do the business. It will be interesting to be
up against Roy”
He admitted to taking a few kicks from Keane during Irish training
sessions. “Yeah, a good few times, but he’s a legend. I know a few people in
the Irish team had differences with him, but I love him to bits. He’s one of
my heroes, what with me being a young lad from Ireland. He’s a legend back
there.
“He’s just a man who gets the best out of you. I know from when I was
playing with him in Ireland, when I was a young lad, just having him beside me
on the pitch, reassuring me and getting the best out of me. So I’m sure it’s
the same with the Man United players. It’s always good to have him around.”
Damien confided that he has yet to master his role at the front of the
diamond.
“It’s different, I’m still learning. It does give you a chance to get
a lot of the ball, but I’m still learning and enjoying it.”
Everyone knows that today’s game is hugely important. Sir Alex Ferguson
has admitted that he has been thinking about it all week, including when he
selected his team for their Champions League match away to Panathinaikos.
But everyone always says that it’s the games against the other teams that
matter, and it’s only the same three points up for grabs against the top
clubs. Damien is beginning to think it might be different this season.
“It’s hard to say now, but the three of us so far haven’t been dropping
any points against the likes of Southampton, Middlesbrough or what have you,
so who knows, it might come down to the games against each other. We’ll see
what happens.”
