RANIERI: TERRY IS KEY TO FUTURE
Sunday 30th November 2003
Claudio Ranieri has insisted that, even with Roman Abramovich signing
blank cheques, he would never replace John Terry at the centre of his Chelsea
defence.
The Blues boss believes that he has one of the best players in the Premiers
hip in Terry - and would not even swap him for Manchester United's Rio
Ferdinand.
"It is difficult to say who I would rather have because they are both
great players, but I am a Chelsea manager and I choose John," Ranieri told the
Sunday Mirror.
"I know Ferdinand is the most expensive defender in the world, but the
money is not important. United had more money than us at the time.
"At this moment John is the captain when Marcel Desailly is not around,
and for me it was an easy decision even though he is so young.
"He is a leader - a leader inside. John may be young but he can transmit
something from inside.
"This is a quality of character that is only in some players, not all.
"Some men just have this ability to deal with the responsibility - and in
my opinion John is one of them.
"Franco Baresi in Italy was another who became captain when he was young.
But wearing the armband is not important in itself, the key thing is that they
are just leaders.
"Baresi never went round saying, 'I am the captain', he just led. And John
is the same.
"He is the iron man - and I've said before that he can be for Chelsea what
Tony Adams was for Arsenal."
