LONDON, Dec 10 (Reuters) - UEFA officials said on Wednesday they were
awaiting a report into Chelsea's Champions League clash against Besiktas which
was interrupted by crowd trouble.
A spokesman for soccer's European governing body, however, said it was not
likely to take action until February even if it decided to impose sanctions.
Tuesday's Group G game, staged at the neutral venue of Gelsenkirchen in
Germany, was won 2-0 by Chelsea but the second half was delayed for around six
minutes after fans pelted the pitch with missiles and toilet rolls.
The result sent Chelsea through as group winners and condemned Beskitas to
a place in the UEFA Cup.
A UEFA spokesman said: 'We are waiting for the referee and delegates'
report, it should come in today.
'We will then decide whether we need to instigate disciplinary proceedings.'
He said UEFA's next disciplinary panel meeting was scheduled for late
February and any sanctions were unlikely to be decided before then.
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, told the BBC: 'It was lucky that nobody
was hurt. We had bundles of coins coming at us, even in the warm-up.
'I am sure UEFA have got legislation to deal with this and it is about
time they did something about it.'
UEFA usually punishes unruly fan behaviour by fining their clubs, although
the worst incidents can lead to teams playing home matches behind closed doors
or even being banned from competitions.
There have been a number of incidents at games involving Turkish and
English teams in recent seasons, both at club and national level.
Despite protests from Besiktas officials, Tuesday's match was staged in
Germany because of security concerns following a series of bomb attacks in
Turkey last month. Besiktas fans far outnumbered Chelsea fans at the game
because of Germany's large Turkish population.
