RANIERI: WE SWITCHED OFF
Saturday 13th December 2003
Claudio Ranieri lamented Chelsea's second half display as his side crashed
to their first home Premiership defeat of the season at the hands of Bolton
Wanderers.
John Terry's last minute own goal handed The Trotters the points after
Bruno N'Gotty's header had cancelled out Hernan Crespo's effort before the
break.
Italian coach Ranieri was satisfied with his players' first half display
and felt The Blues should have grabbed more than one goal.
But Ranieri had no complaints with the final outcome as he was bitterly
disappointed with his team relying on their individual components rather than
working together as a collective unit.
"In the first half, we played very well, we touched and moved the ball and
created a lot of chances, maybe deserving more goals," said Ranieri.
"But suddenly they score a goal. It was a stupid goal for us to concede.
"We were too nervous in the second half. I said to continue playing
football but we tried to run with the ball too much.
"In the second half Bolton deserved to win and well done to them. Bolton
defended deep and very well with all their men.
"Football is a game for a squad, it is not an individual game. This is
the principal reason why we lost today.
"If you run with the ball, you will always have two, three or four
opponents around you but if you touch the ball, you can maybe get one against
one.
"When we did this in the first half we created a lot of chances but in the
second half we switched off."
