Former Chelsea favourite Graham Rix told Sky Sports news that he expects
his old club to reach the Champions League quarter-final - despite being given
the "toughest draw".
Claudio Ranieri's side face Bundesliga leaders VfB Stuttgart in the last
16 following Friday morning's draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
Stuttgart, who finished behind Manchester United in the group stages, are
unbeaten domestically, but although he admits the draw could have been kinder
to Chelsea, Rix is still backing them to carry on taking Europe by storm.
"I think that this is possibly the toughest draw they could have had," he
said. "But I still think they are more than capable of doing the job over two
legs.
"I think this Chelsea side are capable of winning both home an away and
they've got the players to do it. The key for me, is how are Stuttgart going
to approach it? Are they going to go all out attack in the first leg at home
and then give nothing away if they do well, or do they play it differently?
"But the bottom line is, I don't think it matters. I expect Chelsea to get
the result over two legs."
Stuttgart have taken many people by surprise this season, but Gavin
Hamilton, editor of World Soccer, says there is more to worry about than the
front pairing of Kevin Kyrani and Kleb.
Kyrani has forced his way into the German national side and scored one of
the goals in the 2-1 Group E win over United, but with an amazing three goals
conceded in 23 games, Hamilton has warned Chelsea that although their
opponents lack experience at this level, they could find goals hard to come
by.
"They are not a big club in the Bundesliga," he said. "They are a small
squad and young squad that works on limited resources, so it was a bit of a
surprise that they made the Champions League and got to the knockout stages.
"It is unknown territory for them now.
"Felxi Magath is the coach and general manager, and has a very strong
influence over the club. They have a very tight defence, but Kevin Kyrani and
Kleb are the two to pick out, but they've also got a decent goalkeeper in
(Timo) Hildebrand. Buy Kyrani is the one to stop.
Chelsea travel to the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion for the first leg on
Wednesday, Ferbuary 25, with the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday,
March 9.
