STUTTGART LOOKING FOR REVENGE
Friday 12th December 2003
By Thomas Zeh
Bundesliga leaders VfB Stuttgart are keen to get revenge for the 1-0 defeat
they suffered at the hands of Chelsea in the European Cup Winners' Cup final in
1998, when the two sides meet in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Stuttgart have had a fine start to the season, being unbeaten in Die Bundesliga
and comfortably qualifying from the group stages of Europe's premier club
competition.
Money-bags Chelsea will pose a major threat but Stuttgart have an incentive as
they mull over the two-legged meeting with The Blues.
"Chelsea is an enormous challenge for us, but there's still an open bill to be
settled after we lost the European final," declared Stuttgart president Erwin
Staudt with regard to the Stockholm-based final which was decided by Gianfranco
Zola's goal.
Coach Felix Magath, however, believes his young side will stand a chance
against big-spending Chelsea.
"They'll be a tough nut, but we can get them out of our way," said Magath. "The
club (Chelsea) invested plenty of money into the team, but it needs time
before a team gets together.
"They have outstanding individuals, but our strength is our unity, we are a
real team," claimed Magath, while keeper Timo Hildebrand stressed that the
favourites' burden is placed on Claudio Ranieri's side.
"They are currently the best team in The Premiership, but we have already been
the underdogs in the first group stage and yet qualified. And now we are keen
to use our chance against them," said Hildebrand.
