RANIERI RUES IBARRA RESPONSE

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri conceded that Monaco's first goal just
before the half time whistle had ambushed his side's attempt to overcome the
3-1 first leg deficit.
The Blues were flying when Frank Lampard put them 2-0 up on the night on
44 minutes, but Hugo Ibarra's effort moments later changed the complexion of
the game - and was the undoubted turning point for Ranieri.
"We had the match in our hands but then we conceded a goal at the end of
the half," declared the despondent Italian. "If we had gone in 2-0 up at half
time, then it's another match. I said before the game that Monaco are a great
team when they counter-attack - and they have a very good goalscorer
(Fernando Morientes).
"But there were a lot of chances for both sides in the first half and I
think the match could have finished 6-2 or 6-3. Everybody knew it was a
difficult game. We put them under pressure and dominated - it was a very good
performance, only the result is against us.
"I said to the players at half time, 'keep going because we are playing
well' - but of course it was hard. They all wanted to win so when you concede
a goal at the end of the first half everyone felt down. I tried to motivate
them - but then they (Monaco) scored again..."
When questioned about his future at Stamford Bridge, 'The Tinkerman'
replied: "I will continue to work - that is my way."
