Frank Lampard’s runner-up finish in the Footballer of the Year poll, announced
yesterday, after a similar honour in the Player of the Year vote, makes him a
rare Chelsea player.
He is only the third to be shortlisted in the PFA Player of the Year vote.
Gianfranco Zola was similarly honoured in 1997 and 2003, and Jimmy Floyd
Hasselbaink in 2002.
Zola is the only Chelsea player to have won the Footballer of the Year
accolade. Peter Bonetti and Ruud Gullit have been the only other runners-up.
Frank’s selection into the PFA divisional team along with John Terry is also
not a common achievement. Going back 20 years, our selected players have been:
