Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro today gave an extraordinary insight
into Abramovich's relationship with his players.
The Russian billionaire's post-match visits to the dressing room have been
the source of much intrigue all season, but Babayaro reveals that he often sits
quietly in the corner and could be mistaken for a member of the club's staff.
Babayaro said: "Abramovich is a very humble man and doesn't say very much.
He comes into the dressing room and sits down in the corner with his hands on
his knees. If you didn't know who he was you'd think he was a cleaner!
"He shakes the players' hands and observes what's going on but that's about
it. He's very quiet and modest."
Babayaro has been one of the casualties of the Abramovich revolution,
making just 13 starts last season following the ￡7million signing of Wayne
Bridge. The Nigerian left-back has one year left on his contract but is
determined to stay at Chelsea.
He added: "I'd like to stay at the club but what can you do if you're not
wanted? It depends on the club but I'm in no rush to leave.
"There's going to be players leaving and players coming and it's not really
up to me."
Babayaro is confident that Chelsea can make a real challenge for the Premier
ship title next season as all the players will have had a season to get to know
each other.
He said: "Chelsea did okay this season but we will be even better in the
future.
"At the start of the season we couldn't even shout to each other in training
because we didn't know each other's names very well but it will be different
next season."
