However, London-based Italian journalist and Zola's friend
Giancarlo Galavotti of Gazzetta Dello Sport, puts a rather
different slant on affairs. Galavotti insisted on Sky Sports
TV that Zola was desperate to stay with Chelsea, where he
and his family loved the London life, but felt badly treated
by the club. He said Zola was very unhappy about leaving the
West London club.
Prior to the dramatic takeover of Chelsea by Roman Abramovich,
Zola had been offered a contract he felt was insulting, according
to Galavotti, involving a reduction of some 50% in his wages.
When the club came back with an improved offer after the takeover,
said Galavotti, it was too late because Zola had already pledged
himself to Cagliari.
