Players will be reporting for training at different times of the day today as
they return from international football played over the last 36 hours.
Below is the global work of Chelsea men in that time.
Denmark 2 Romania 2
Denmark didn’t play at the weekend, so this was Jesper Gronkjaer’s first game
since the second leg against Zilina. He was substituted with ten minutes to go.
Adrian Mutu scored his fourth international goal in three games since joining
us to make the score 1-1. Denmark equalised to make it 2-2 in the final minute.
Denmark can still win the Euro ’04 qualifying group, Romania can still make
the play-offs but can also miss out altogether.
England Under 21s 1 Portugal Under 21s 2
Played on Tuesday evening, Glen Johnson was used on the right of midfield and
performed well. England failed to qualify
England 2 Liechtenstein 0
For just the third time in history, three Chelsea players started for England.
Frank Lampard, John Terry and Wayne Bridge played all 90 minutes. For the
second time in history, four finished a game. Joe Cole joined them with over 20
minutes to go.
Republic of Ireland 2 Turkey 2
Played on Tuesday evening, a friendly, Damien Duff played just the first-half.
Slovenia 0 France 2
France were one of four teams to qualify for Euro ’04 last night. Marcel
Desailly played all 90 minutes, but Claude Makelele was sent off for a second
bookable offence with just over 20 minutes left. He will miss the next game
Venezuela 0 Argentina 3
Played on Tuesday. Hernan Crespo headed the second goal, he and Juan Sebastian
Veron were both in the starting line up. Veron’s booking means he’ll miss the
next game, but that is part of a double header so he’ll probably make the trip
anyway.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and on loan Boudewijn Zenden weren’t involved in
Holland’s 3-1 defeat in the Czech Republic. But on loan Mikael Forssell scored
Finland’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw in Wales. Alexei Smertin was part of the
Russia team which kept qualification hopes alive with a 4-1 win over
Switzerland. Eidur Gudjohnsen and Alexis Nicolas were already back with Chelsea
after weekend internationals because their countries had no midweek games.
