Celestine Babayaro played the whole of Nigeria’s opening African Cup
of Nations game at left-back yesterday but couldn’t prevent his side going
down 1-0 to Morocco in Montasir, Tunisia.
The goal came 13 minutes from time and was scored by substitute Youssef
Hadji, younger brother of Aston Villa’s Mustapha who is not taking part.
The result is widely considered to have been a surprise with Nigeria one of
the pre-tournament favourites but Morocco had not conceded a single goal
during qualification for the Finals.
Nigeria face a crucial second game against group leaders South Africa on
Saturday while Geremi’s Cameroon are next in action tomorrow when they take
on Zimbabwe.
