NIGERIA WANT TRIO BACK

    Nigeria have announced their intention to recall the three players

they sent home from the African Cup of Nations, but Portsmouth boss Harry

Redknapp does not believe Yakubu Aiyegbeni will be keen on going back.


    Pompey striker Aiyegbeni, Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro and

Schalke forward Victor Agali were all banished from the African Cup of

Nations for a breach of discipline.


    Nigeria FA chief Ibrahim Galadima went on to criticise the trio,

claiming they were polluting the rest of the squad.


    They all returned to their respective clubs and Aiyegbeni turned out

against Wolves at the weekend.


    They were all looking to get on with their club careers, but have now

been handed a dilemma after the Nigerians announced they plan to bring the

troika back for the knockout stages.


    "About the three players who were suspended, I will now say the

suspension has been lifted and the players will join us any moment from

now," said Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu.


    "The three players have shown remorse about what they did. They have

apologised and that's why we are forgiving them, because they are part of

the team."


    It is not known if they want to return after what went on, but Pompey

chief Redknapp believes his player would prefer to stay at Fratton Park.


    "I am in deep shock," Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "It has come

completely out of the blue.


    "I don't think he will be that keen on going back after what has been

said.


    "They came out and said a few things about why they were sent home that

were not true and he was disappointed.


    "I don't know what the rules are but I don't think he will be keen.


    "I am going to go seek out some clairifcation about the rules.


    "I know the lad and he is not one for going out and breaking curfews,

so it surprised me.


    "I think he is disappointed about how he has been treated so he might

not be keen."


    Redknapp would prefer to keep the forward in his plans, as he said: "We

have brought some players in and are not too badly off, but we would like

to keep him because he is a top player.


    "I am completely in shock. It is very strange, bizarre.


    "From what I have seen and heard of the competition, it all seems a bit

farcical to me."
