The conquerors were Nigeria, for whom Celestine Babayaro has not returned from expulsion despite an attempted recall, who came back from going a goal down to win 2-1. Real Mallorca’s Samuel Eto'o put Cameroon, who had won the previous two African tournaments, ahead but a Jay-Jay Okocha free-kick drew matters level just before the break and then John Utaka, who plays his football in France for Lens, struck the winner with just over quarter-of-an-hour ago. Geremi’s most notable contribution was a long pass over the top of the defence for the Eto'o goal. He played central midfield rather than on the right as in previous games but remained the principal free-kick and corner taker. The closest he came to scoring was a free-kick that drew a save just minutes before Okocha’s more successful effort. Nigeria go on to meet hosts Tunisia in the semi-finals.
