ZOLA DROPS CHELSEA HINT

    Gianfranco Zola says that he may well return to Chelsea one day

as he keeps in contact with billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.


    The veteran Italian left Stamford Bridge last summer, mainly due

to the lack of money for a new contract - although there were also

other reasons behind his departure.


    Then Abramovich took over The Blues, but despite his seemingly

bottomless pit of cash, Zola still moved on and returned to Italy.


    Zola is still playing for Cagliari in Serie B, but says that he has

not ruled out a return to Stamford Bridge in the future, as he regularly

talks with Abramovich.


    "I had not made any final decision when Abramovich arrived," Zola

told the Telegraph.

   
    "We get on very well, we have spoken a lot and he's keen for me to

perhaps come back one day. He wants me to stay involved.


    "Maybe leaving when I did was always going to happen. After the

first discussion about my contract we were not even close.


    "I said 'let's wait'. There was no money and they could guarantee me

nothing.


    "I also have a bad habit. I dislike sitting on the bench and I

couldn't be sure I was going to play enough and, at my age, you need to

play and Claudio Ranieri understood this."


    Zola has nothing but respect for Ranieri - and hopes that he is given

time to mould his expensive squad into a successful side.


    "I've seen examples of Italian sides spending fortunes and not

winning anything for a few seasons. First he has to build a team."


    Asked if he thinks Ranieri will be given the time he needs, Zola

added: "I think it would be a mistake if he wasn't."
