Parker adjusts slowly to Blues move
Scott Parker has admitted that he is taking longer to settle in at
Chelsea than he expected - but he is relishing every minute of life at
Stamford Bridge.
Midfielder Parker was manager Claudio Ranieri's only signing during
the January transfer window when he joined from London neighbours Charlton.
He had hoped to make his European debut in midweek but was kept on the
bench for the Champions League victory in Stuttgart.
However, Parker is set to return to the team for tomorrow's Premiership
clash at Manchester City as Ranieri is sure to tinker with his team as usual.
Having been the star player at The Valley, Parker is taking his time to
settle into a club where he is just one of many big fish in a big pond.
'When you come to a new club it is quite hard to settle in and maybe I
never realised how hard it is,' said Parker. 'I had been at Charlton all my
life and that's all I really knew, but now I am with a new set of lads.
'Coming here is totally different, with the way things are run and I am
very pleased with the way things have gone.
'In any walk of life companies are different, and things are new to me
here such as the way you prepare for games and the atmosphere in the changing
room before them.'
Parker is hoping his move to one of the top three clubs in the
Premiership will increase his international ambitions, and he is aiming to
be in England's squad for this summer's European Championship finals in
Portugal.
He knows he must work hard to impress England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson
, who left him out of the squad for the recent friendly in Portugal, and
feels that being at Chelsea will help his cause.
'I was disappointed not to be included in the last England squad and I
want to try my hardest to get back in,' said Parker. 'All I can do is keep
working hard and try to do the best I can and I feel being part of Chelsea
is the best way for me to get in the squad.
'It is going to be hard for me because there are so many good players
in my position. All I can do is keep playing to the best of my ability and
you never know what will happen in the summer. Injuries come along and I
may get my chance.
'Becoming a Chelsea player is going to give me more confidence and make
me a better player so hopefully that will help.'
Chelsea are likely to welcome back Adrian Mutu for the trip to the City
of Manchester Stadium, after the Romanian striker missed the European tie
in Germany with a thigh injury.
