LAMPARD: DAY I FOUND OUT ABOUT ROM
Wednesday 24th March 2004
Frank Lampard has revealed the first time he heard of a Russian
billionaire trying to take over Chelsea was from Rio Ferdinand.
Roman Abramovich's arrival shook football to its very foundations last
July and the shockwaves are still there for all to see with Chelsea's
assembly of star-studded players.
The West Londoners were in deep financial trouble before the arrival of
Abramovich, but their new-found financial clout means they are able to bid
for any player on the planet and out-bid most other clubs.
England international Lampard was expected to play only a bit-part role
for The Blues this term when manager Claudio Ranieri was given carte blanche
to buy any player he wanted, signing Geremi, Claude Makelele, Joe Cole and
Juan Sebastian Veron which looked to spell the end of the former West Ham
star's future at Stamford Bridge.
However, Lampard has gone on to have the best season of his career so
far, helping Chelsea into the UEFA Champions League quarter finals and to
become the best placed challengers to Premiership leaders Arsenal.
Lampard reveals he was sitting by a swimming pool in the Las Vegas desert
when he received a phone call from old friend Ferdinand of Manchester United
, saying rumours were rife of a takeover at Stamford Bridge and that his
career at the club would be over before it had a chance to get going.
"I was in Vegas on holiday lying by a pool last summer," Lampard told
The Daily Mail.
"And Rio rang and said that there was a Russian billionaire
taking over Chelsea.
"He told me this geezer was really rich and was going to buy everyone
and I was a goner, but I took no notice. A week later I came back and it was
all true."
With Ranieri boosting his squad with a host of signings it looked
inevitable Lampard was on his way out but he revealed he decided to stay and
make the rest of the world take note of his own particular talents rather
than fall by the wayside.
"I said to myself you can either look for another club, or become a
better footballer and play every game," he added.
"I decided to become a
better player."
That he did. Lampard has become one of the only players Ranieri the
'Tinkerman' has constantly relied on, with the ace only missing one game
this season in the Carling Cup.
The Italian coach's future has been the subject of constant speculation
and it remains to be seen whether he will once again be in charge next season
but Lampard has praised the former Valencia coach for how much he has helped
him mature and develop as a player.
"He's made me much more aware tactically. I was too naive for Champions
League football when I came here but now I know I can compete at that level.
I have matured a lot mentally," he said.
"The most important thing Claudio did was to take me aside when I first
came to the club. I loved to run forward at any opportunity and scored 40
goals in four seasons for West Ham, but he explained to me that I shouldn't
run all the time.
"The difference is making right decisions and he has taught me how to do
that."
