Claudio Ranieri hailed Chelsea’s 12th 1-0 League win at White Hart Lane
but refused to be enticed into dreaming of overtaking the current leaders.
“We don’t see Arsenal,” he smiled, firmly. “We only look at ourselves
to continue. Now there are seven matches to the end and we want to do our
best. We’re in good condition and playing good football. It was difficult
today. You know London derbies are always tight, and it was difficult to
come here and win.
“After ten, 15 minutes we start to play and control the match better.
They crossed the ball well but there were no tall players in our box. Second
-half they were more dangerous. We counter-attacked very well, and at this
moment we must kill. But it’s okay, we get three points.”
Tottenham’s caretaker David Pleat, who repeated his strange and unworthy
assertions about “gypsy” managers felt that his players had acquitted
themselves well.
“It is always difficult against a good team,” he said. “You are always
vulnerable to the counter-attack, especially with good attackers who can spin
so well. I thought our centre-halves did very well, as did theirs.
“It was a close game, just a shame for us that it is still 1-0 to
Chelsea again.”
Our unbeaten run against Spurs is now so extended that it was not even
raised as an issue in the press conference. Instead, Ranieri talked only of
the games remaining in an already successful season – we will outstrip our
best ever points tally with five more League points.
“Three points at this time are very important,” he continued. “I said
to the players we are working very hard since the beginning of the season
and we are very close to doing something important for Chelsea. Everything
is in our hands. We must continue in this way.”
He also singled out Scott Parker – excellent in the second-half – and
Marco Ambrosio for praise.
“Ambrosio is used to being the second goalkeeper,” he grinned, “and
has the mentality to do this. It’s important for us. He made two or three
very good saves.”
Then the Chelsea boss turned his mind to Tuesday’s match at Highbury.
“The Champions League is a gamble for us,” he said; a familiar theme.
“We know how strong and very good Arsenal are. We like to try. 1-1 is not a
great result for us, but we have scored in every game away in the Champions
League and we haven’t conceded away in any Champions League game. Maybe we
can keep the same way.”
