Chelsea can conquer Europe
By Alan Hansen
BBC Sport football expert
Chelsea have been at pains to guard against the risk of complacency as they
prepare to face Monaco in the Champions League semi-final - but the brutal
truth is they will never have a better chance to win Europe's elite
competition.
Claudio Ranieri is right to stress the dangers of taking Monaco too lightly
after the euphoria of Chelsea's win at Arsenal in the last round.
Monaco's performance in overturning a two-goal deficit to knock out
Real Madrid in the quarter-finals shows they certainly have a bit about
them.
And just in case they need another reminder, we must not forget the small
matter of Didier Deschamps' side scoring eight goals against Deportivo La Coruna
in an earlier phase.
But ask Chelsea the question about whether they would rather have faced
Real or Monaco, and the answer would be Monaco every time.
Chelsea are preparing for one of the biggest games in their history,
and they do it in the knowledge that the big guns of Real, Manchester United,
AC
Milan and Arsenal are no longer lying in wait for them.
This is not to dismiss Monaco. In Deschamps, they have a coach who has
been there and done it all, both for club and country.
He has won this competition, knows what it takes and has a side that is
clearly well-organised and highly-motivated.
And in Fernando Morientes, a Champions League winner with Real, and
Ludovic Giuly, they have players who have demonstrated their quality on
the big stage.
Chelsea must also beware of a factor I remember from my playing days,
when you mentally prepare to face one team in the next round, in their
case Real, then suddenly find you have to tackle a different challenge.
But I'm confident Chelsea can get to the final, which would be a massive
boost for the club in terms of profile and prestige.
Chelsea have proved they can defend in outstanding fashion in this
competition - and while people think this is a bit of a hobby horse of
mine, Real and AC Milan have already produced compelling evidence that
you are nothing without proper defending.
Men like John Terry will be important for them, because at some stage on
Tuesday they will come under intense pressure, which is when defenders
and goalkeeper will be vital.
Frank Lampard must exert his influence in midfield and, as against
Arsenal, I feel Chelsea must make this a high-tempo game.
They must not adopt a more studied, continental approach.
It is a blow that Damien Duff has not travelled. He would have been a
very important player in terms of providing an outlet and holding the
ball up.
The one cloud on the horizon is the continuing uncertainty over the
future of Ranieri, which has not become any clearer after his meeting
with chief executive Peter Kenyon last week.
This situation is now reaching semi-farcical proportions and is not
helping Chelsea at all.
Chelsea's players entered the biggest game of their lives against Arsenal
not knowing if their manager was staying or going - now they enter a game
of even greater proportions with the same dilemma.
And there will be certain players who will think, if they get a bit of
stick, that the manager might not be around himself next season.
As for the game and the competition itself, it presents Chelsea with a
fantastic opportunity.
If they win it, they can attract even bigger names than they already have
and it will give the club massive status.
Perhaps more importantly, winning the Champions League would set them up
perfectly to win what they must really aim for, which is the championship.
My first big trophy with Liverpool was the European Cup in 1978, but in
typical Anfield fashion, as the medals were being handed out and the
champagne passed around, we were being reminded that the big one was the
league championship, the real bread and butter.
The European Cup is wonderful to look back on, but the championship would
mean so much to Chelsea.
And winning the Champions League will provide them with the self-belief
to go on and do that, as well as make them an even bigger magnet for the
top players.
All this is for the future - and first the job needs to be done against
Monaco.
Chelsea cannot afford to take them lightly, but I believe they have the
ability and resilience to get through to the final.
