Roman's tears at Monaco loss
By Matt Hughes, Evening Standard
23 April 2004
Roman Abramovich was moved to tears and endured a sleepless night foll
owing Chelsea's shock European Cup semi-final defeat in Monaco.
Standard Sport can reveal the details of the Russian's extraordinary r
eaction to a night of European heartache.
Chelsea fans have become used to the sight of their new owner jumping
for joy and warmly applauding his players but his natural exuberance w
as dimmed on a night when he experienced his first footballing setback.
Abramovich was stunned by the second-half collapse of a team that cost
him £130million to assemble and struggled to contain his emotions at
the final whistle.
He had tears in his eyes as he walked across the pitch for a post-matc
h meeting with Claudio Ranieri but had recovered his composure by the
time he entered the dressing room.
Ranieri immediately began explaining the reasons for his bizarre subst
itutions and apologised for comments attributed to him in a Spanish ne
wspaper, but was told there was no need to apologise.
Abramovich invited Ranieri back to his yacht, Le Grand Bleu, but the I
talian politely declined, explaining he wanted to discuss the game wit
h his players at a postmatch meal.
Abramovich returned to his yacht for an informal gathering with friend
s but after they left he found himself unable to sleep.
The 37-year-old was still struggling to come to terms with his team's
poor performance so at 2am he went to the team hotel, La Port Palace,
for a meeting with chief executive Peter Kenyon, chairman Bruce Buck a
nd business associate Eugene Shivdler.
Abramovich had a drink in the hotel bar and discussed the match with s
everal players, including Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Lampard and M
arcel Desailly, before returning to his yacht in the small hours.
Abramovich's current location is unclear and his staff have been told
not to reveal his movements following a security review.
Kenyon, meanwhile, has stressed the importance of Chelsea finishing sec
ond in the Premiership.
Manchester United closed the gap to one point with a 2-0 win over Char
lton on Tuesday and the Blues must travel to Old Trafford next month,
but Kenyon is determined to finish above his old club. Finishing secon
d would guarantee Chelsea's place in the group stages of next season's
Champions League and is worth almost £3m in prizemoney.
Kenyon said: "There's a big difference between finishing second and th
ird and finishing above Manchester United would be a big achievement.
"We want to finish first but that goal has eluded us this year, but fi
nishing above a key rival is important. We've got a massive game again
st Newcastle on Sunday and have it all to do."
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard's Stamford Bridge future could be in doubt af
ter contract talks stalled yesterday.
The England midfielder, who has two years left on his deal, is keen fo
r pay parity with team-mates such as Juan Veron and Claude Makelele, w
ho earn around £80,000 a week.
Steve Kutner, Lampard's agent, confirmed: "Talks between Chelsea and o
urselves have stopped because the club said they could not agree to th
e terms which we were looking for. The ball's in Chelsea's court. We w
ould like to get it done.
"If Frank had his way he would sign a long-term contract and stay at C
helsea."
Internazionale are monitoring the Lampard developments.
