POMPEY OPEN TALKS TO KEEP SMERTIN

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has confirmed The Blues have
been made aware of their bid to hang onto Smertin, either permanently or on
another season-long deal.
Earlier this week, Chelsea agreed to allow Mikael Forssell to stay at
Birmingham City for another season and a similar arrangement could be
thrashed out for Smertin.
Storrie is hopeful Smertin will stay but admits further discussions are
required with both the player and his employers.
"Alexei is one who would be in our plans and we have registered our
interest with Chelsea," said Storrie.
"We like him but there are a lot of factors involved. Very importantly,
Alexei is a Chelsea player, and, as much as he likes it here, we need his
view. He will have a big say in it all. Just as importantly, Chelsea have
to decide what they are doing in regard to their manager. Until that is
sorted out, nothing can happen.
"We have not had any discussions about a fee. We don't know if we would
loan him for another year or buy him permanently."
