Reserves aim for six at Selhurst
Tuesday, Feb 08, 2005
Chelsea Reserves travel south to Crystal Palace tonight with a much-changed
side looking to make it six wins in a row.
International call-ups, a transfer, injury and illness mean Mick McGiven
starts with five different faces from the team that began the win over
Portsmouth last time out.
Goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley suffered a thigh strain during that match so
Yves Ma Kalambay, who came on that night, continues between the posts.
Anthony Grant, the centre-pin of the midfield this season, is ill so his
place goes to Jimmy Smith.
Another midfield spot went up for grabs with the departure of Craig
Rocastle to Sheffield Wednesday and it has gone to James Younghusband
while Portugal Under 21s have ferried away Filipe Oliveira and Nuno Morais.
Dean Smith takes over at right-back and Joe Tillen will play on the left
of Sebastian Kneissl in attack who is looking for his third goal in
three games. The shuffle means first time places on the bench for 17
year-old striker Jack Watkins and 16 year-old midfielder Dean Furman.
The Crystal Palace squad contains Neil Shipperley. Now 30 years-old, the
Chelsea youth product who played 48 games for our first team between ’92
and ’95 has only made three sub appearances for Palace seniors in an
injury-hit season.
Shipperley is the most experienced player in a squad that contains four
others with first team action under their belts: Danny Butterfield started
the season at right-back but like Shipperley has suffered injuries; Mark
Hudson is a central defender bought from Fulham in the summer; Wayne
Andrews also arrived in the summer having proved a prolific striker in
Division Two at Colchester.
In goal tonight will be young Argentinian Julian Speroni who was beaten
by Didier Drogba and Tiago when Chelsea played at Selhurst Park in August.
The rest of tonight’s squad are young players.
Palace are enjoying a good season at reserve level, currently lying fourth
in the southern section, six points behind leaders Charlton but with a
game in hand.
In the corresponding fixture at Aldershot in September they beat Chelsea
by two goals to nil. A win this time could take Chelsea up to sixth.
The full Chelsea line-up tonight is:
Yves Ma Kalambay, Dean Smith, Adrian Pettigrew, Steven Watt, Ben Hudell,
James Younghusband, Jimmy Smith, Danny Hollands (Capt), Danny Woodards,
Sebastian Kneissl, Joe Tillen.
Subs: James Russell, Ed Brand, Dean Furman, Jack Watkins, Michele Gallaccio.
Palace from:
Speroni, Wilkinson, Butterfield, Hudson, Andrews, Togwell, Berry, Wilson,
R. Hall, Dolan, Grabban, Shipperley, Welsh, Wiggins, Smith, Starkey, Hickie.
The game is at Selhurst Park and kicks-off at 7pm.
