Holmes waits on Chelsea doctor

Kelly Holmes's future may lie in the hands of Chelsea, after the doctor who
helped keep her fit enough to win two Olympic gold medals joined the
Premiership leaders.
Dr Bryan English, arguably the most important member of Team Holmes in the
run-up to her success in Athens, last week signed a full-time contract with
Chelsea until the end of the season. He wants to continue working with Holmes
and other leading British athletes he has treated, including Darren Campbell
and Jason Gardener, but he admits he will need the permission of Chelsea's
chief executive Peter Kenyon.
I'm fully employed by Chelsea," English said last night in Barcelona, where
he is helping prepare the team for their Champions League quarter- final
tie tomorrow. "If I was to see someone like Kelly or Jason it would be
totally at the discretion of my new employer."
The injury-prone Holmes relied heavily on English in the build-up to the
Olympics. Aged 34, she is unlikely to be able to continue until the world
championships in Helsinki in August if he is not available to help her deal
with the stresses and strains that are part and parcel of being a world-class
athlete.
"If someone like Kelly needed to see me I'd probably give the chief executive
of the club a call and explain the situation and I'm sure there would not be
a problem," said English. "I'm sure this club is proactive and would be
supportive."
