Souness: I love Mourinho's style
By Michael Hart, Evening Standard
3 December 2004
Graeme Souness believes fans will look back in future years and acclaim Jose
Mourinho's Chelsea for their starring role in what he claims is a golden era
in the game's history.
The Newcastle manager, whose team face the Premiership leaders at Stamford
Bridge tomorrow, has been around long enough to know a class act when he sees
one, but he's convinced that Chelsea will be chased all the way to the
finishing line by Arsenal and Manchester United.
As a player, the former Scotland captain was a hugely influential figure during
Liverpool's golden era and when he went into management with Glasgow Rangers in
1986, Sir Alex Ferguson was still at Aberdeen.
"People often talk to me about the good old days but, in 20 years' time, what
we are doing today will be considered the good old days," he said. "In my
opinion these are the glory days and, as a manager, it's a privilege to be
involved.
"In years to come I think they'll be saying: 'D'you remember the great Chelsea
and Arsenal teams at the start of the century?' You never know, they might be
saying the same about Newcastle too. Sir Bobby Robson said that football today
is about as good as it gets and I agree with that. I can't see how it can get
much better. This is the ultimate and it's good to be part of it."
Souness played in a brilliant Liverpool team who dominated Europe for the best
part of a decade. He won five League Championships and three European Cup
winners' medals.
"When I watch old film it always looks as if we played in a farmer's field in
those days," he said. "We were a good passing team but even Arsenal would have
struggled to play their quality football on those pitches.
"I've no doubt though that, with all the modern benefits players have today,
the Liverpool of my time would have been a top team."
Souness, now 51, is one of Europe's most experienced coaches having worked with
Rangers, where he won three League titles, Liverpool, Galatasaray, Southampton,
Torino, Benfica and Blackburn Rovers.
Mourinho also worked at Benfica. It was his first management job and he walked
out after just two months because the board refused to improve his contract.
"It's easy to be dismissive of Chelsea's success and say they've achieved this
and that simply because of the money they have," said Souness. "But the manager
still has to do the job. He has to sign the right players, pick the right team
and get them to win consistently. He's done all that in my opinion with some
style.
"You also have to say that he has an outstanding pedigree. You don't win the
Champions League and the UEFA Cup without talent and without making the right
decisions.
"But what I've learned is that no manager gets everything right. Yes, you enjoy
the highs, but there are lots of lows too. That's the price on the ticket.
There's a great sense of responsibility when you're the manager."
Souness is now facing his own challenge, one of the most formidable of his
career. Guided by a who's who of high-profile managers - Kevin Keegan, Kenny
Dalglish, Ruud Gullit and Robson - Newcastle have clambered around the
foothills of real, sustainable success without quite managing to scale the
heights.
"We've been knocking on the door for some years," said Souness. "My job is to
take them up to the next level. Apart from one bad performance at Bolton, I
think our football has been very encouraging."
Since taking over in September Souness has steered Newcastle into the last 32
of the UEFA Cup and won four and drawn three of 10 Premiership games. Chelsea
are bidding for a quadruple of trophies - a unique grand slam prospect that
would eclipse anything Souness achieved as a player with Liverpool.
Their priority remains the Premiership and here Souness can have a say,
especially as his club meet Chelsea again in what could be a decisive final
match of the season at St James' Park in May.
"It's going to be between the three - Chelsea, Arsenal and United," he said.
"The three managers each have their own way of seeing it.
"Alex Ferguson knows his team have come from a long way behind before and won
it. Arsene Wenger is the defending champion and, as such, perhaps has most to
lose and therefore most reason to get his team back on track.
"But Jose Mourinho has the team at the top, and he knows they have the bit
between their teeth. They've got the taste for it and who's to say he won't
spend another £30million in January?" -___-"
