http://skysports.planetfootball.com/list.asp?hlid=243568 Henry's quick thinking by Paul Higham - Last Updated 14 Dec 2004 Arsenal's enthralling battle with Chelsea threw up one major controversy on thepitch - the murky waters of the quick free kick. Thierry Henry's second goal of the game put Arsenal 2-1 ahead on the half hour in controversial circumstances, when firing in a quick free kick. Henry was clearly in conversation with referee Graham Poll as he stood over the ball, where the official has confirmed that he gave the Frenchman permission to take the ball early. Eidur Gudjohnsen knew what was happening and tried to warn Petr Cech, but the Icelander backed away from the ball giving Henry enough room to curl the ball, via a Tiago deflection, past the scrambling goalkeeper and into the net. Although the goal was not enough to win the game, it is bound to raise the same old questions surrounding the quickly-taken free kick. The goal did not ultimately decide the match - where a draw was probably the fair result on the balance of play and chances, but it did raise questions. Poll has confirmed he gave Henry permission to take a quick free kick, but the referee hardly raced away from the ball to give Cech an indication that he was allowing a quick free kick. The attacking side should have an advantage as they have been awarded a free kick, and they should have the choice of foregoing the full ten yards for the wallin order to take a quick pot shot goalwards. However, Chelsea goalkeeper Cech had no way of knowing that a quick one was coming, as Poll's slight movement away from the ball could not be seen from his position behind the wall. Credit has to go to Henry for his awareness, but Chelsea fans would say that their side have been given no chance of defending the free kick by Poll's lack of clear signals. Gudjohnsen may also come in for criticism by Blues fans, as he heard the convers ation and yet retreated away from the ball trying to warn Cech, when if he stayed in front of the ball he would have prevented the kick being taken - albeit atthe expense of a yellow card. It is not the first time Henry has scored from a quick free kick, so maybe Jose Mourinho's side should have been more alert to the danger, but that did not dampen the Portuguese coach's anger at the goal being allowed. Much like the now infamous 'action areas' in the ever-increasing muddle that is the modern offside law, the quick free kick remains a huge grey area. One of the major gripes with fans, as always, is the inconsistency of the officiating as some goals are given and some are chalked off in seemingly identical situations. On this occasion, Henry has proceeded with the full blessing of the official and maybe the only complaint Chelsea could have is that Poll did not do enough to signal that he was allowing the quick free kick. As always, until the laws surrounding quick free kicks are cleared up, these debates are bound to rumble on each time someone sticks one in from a quickly-taken set play. ~~~~ 得一次教訓學一次乖 以後...."善加利用":P .
