Mourinho calls for Christmas Day training

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has insisted his team attend training on
Christmas Day as they look to maintain their position at the top of
the Premiership.

Chelsea play Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day and Mourinho
expects his team to match their ambition with application by training
through the holiday period.

While the former Porto boss insists he puts his family before football,
he believes a little bit of suffering will go some way towards helping
Chelsea achieve their aims.

He said: "Families are more important than football but the players will
be training on December 24 and 25, and we play on Boxing Day.

"We look for responsibility with their ambition. Our families will suffer
a little for the consequences of that, but we are all doing it for our
professional ambitions.

"For the foreign players it is even more difficult than for the English
ones because they cannot have Christmas in their own country, often they
are without family here and they deserve respect. They are so committed."

Chelsea will go into the clash with Villa on the back of their 4-0
demolition of lowly Norwich.

Defender Ricardo Carvalho, who missed the game with a broken toe he
collected against Porto in the Champions League, has an outside chance
of returning - although Mourinho may save him for the trips to Liverpool
and Portsmouth.

Mourinho said: "I think he can come back maybe for Aston Villa on Boxing
Day, maybe not - but for Liverpool on New Year's Day for sure.

"So if we don't have any more injuries, we are in a good position to fight
in the four matches we play over Christmas."

Mourinho is confident Chelsea can win the title if they continue to
maintain their concentration and avoid any serious injuries.

They are five points clear of Arsenal in second place and Mourinho
believes they have now proved they are serious contenders to land their
first title since the 1950s.

He said: "Everybody in this country now knows that Chelsea can win the
Premiership. Maybe three months ago, they would have said no.

"Three months ago, they would have said Chelsea have good players and
the potential to buy some more but they cannot win the Premiership.

"But at the moment that view is changing. Every match is important and
every point is crucial for a club likes us who want to win the Premiership.

"In England everybody can lose points to other clubs. I look at the
fixtures of Manchester United and Arsenal and especially those before
and after Champions League games or internationals because I know these
are crucial moments."

Mourinho goes into the new year confident he can deliver success in more
than one competition but knows the biggest test is yet to come.

Although he is not planning on spending more of owner Roman Abramovich's
money when the transfer window opens next month, he knows injuries could
force his hand.

He adds: "My players are human beings. I don't know what can happen in
the future. People who are performing well could have a break in their
high level. We could have injuries."
