Mour staying cool at Yule!
Dec 24 2004 / By The Evening Chronicle
For once Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was in agreement with his
title-chasing counterparts and admitted his team are likely to
drop points during the festive football programme.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Manchester United boss Sir Alex
Ferguson both believe Christmas and New Year will test Chelsea's
title aspirations to the limit.
The Blues face home games against Aston Villa and Middlesbrough
as well as away trips to Liverpool and Portsmouth over the
holiday period.
They are down to just 16 fit squad players following injuries to
Ricardo Carvalho, Robert Huth, Celestine Babayaro and Scott Parker.
It will be Mourinho's first taste of a packed Premiership programme
and that is the reason for the optimism shared by those in charge
at Highbury and Old Trafford.
Arsenal are five points behind the Barclays Premiership leaders
while Manchester United must overhaul a nine-point deficit if they
are to have any hope of becoming champions.
However, the importance placed on the Christmas and New Year
fixtures by Ferguson and Wenger is not shared by the former Porto
manager, who begins the festive programme with a home game against
Villa on Boxing Day.
Mourinho is expecting to drop a point or two but that will not stop
him trying to remain unbeaten either.
He said: "When we lose points I can imagine a lot of people jumping
and saying things to put some pressure on us.
"I do not see it that way. It is normal to lose points and it is
normal when you play four matches in a few days that you do not
win every match.
"So it will not surprise me if we drop points over this Christmas
period. It is difficult for everybody.
"The big challenge is to be champions at the end of the season. The
Christmas football period means nothing to me.
"We know we have four difficult matches and it is normal you drop
points. So the short-term challenge is to get the maximum points
possible from these four matches and control the five-point advantage
we have in relation to the second position."
Mourinho's Christmas message to the Blues fans, who are relishing the
prospect of their first top flight title since 1955, is that family
is more important than the game.
Mourinho added: "My Christmas message to the fans is that family is
much more important than football.
"Do not care about football and do not worry about Chelsea being
first, second or third or less. Do not be worried about winning or losing.
"Be worried about the people you love, the world and peace. These
things are much more important than football."
That philosophy may be true but Mourinho's Chelsea have shown a
ruthless streak with the rest of the Premiership - losing just one
league game all season.
Their away defeat at Manchester City saw them respond with another
unbeaten run and Mourinho is already preparing his players for a
repeat performance should they come unstuck over Christmas.
