If there is anything that might lead Chelsea to slip up during the run-in, it
will not be complacency. After this match, three or four players,inculuding
Joe Cole, who was named man of the match, had a chat. They were not entirely
happy. "It was not of our best performances. We sould have scored more goals
and had the game won earlier"
Chelsea, it seem, are a club that strive not just to win, but to win in a
particular way. Down the years there have not been too many players at clubs
leading the title race who, come mid-March, are unhappy with a 4-1 victory.
Perhaps Cole, who was put forward to deal with the media in place of Jose
Mourinho, was trying to reflect his manager's perfectionism. Playaer after
players at Chelsea speak of how nothing is left to chance, that Mourinho's
preparations are metculous. Mourinho's appointment certainly marks a shift
in managerial stlye. Arsene Wenger won the Premiership title on broccoli,
Mourinho is doing it with ring-binders.
And on Saturday, Mourinho looked every inch the genius professor. He sat in
full face of the very warm sun, wrapped up in a jacked and scarf, while
Iain Dowie, the Crystal Palace manager, paced the touchline in shorts. Dowie
also works hard on preparation, but three is little many teams can do in the
face of goals such as the one from 25 yards out that Frank Lampard scored to
open Chelsea's account.
"We have to credit Crystal Palace,"Cole said. "I'd like to see them stay up,
they are probably the best of the four teams down there."
