Semi-final Chelsea home and happy

Chelsea’s squad has arrived back in London happy with last night’s
performance at Bayern Munich despite the defeat in stoppage time.
Aggregate victory had been assured by then.

In a game when possession was not gained sufficiently to ‘rest
with the ball’ as Jose Mourinho likes, it was the fighting qualities
that had to come to the fore.

With four centre-backs in defence that was what happened. Frank
Lampard admitted it wasn’t easy. “They came at us, we defended
very strongly, very well, and once Didier got that second goal the
game was virtually over.

“It’s the sort of thing you’d expect. At times they tried to play
it long and put us under pressure. You come to these places, we’re
two goals up, we’re not going to try and play attacking, flowing
football for 90 minutes. We had to defend at times and do them on the
break.”

Fitness coach Rui Faria revealed that Robert Huth was selected at
right-back because Chelsea expected Bayern to play that way.

“We knew the way they play, we knew it was direct football, high
balls, and we knew we needed someone high for set plays.”


William Gallas got forward well for the opening goal, but the full-backs
mostly were restricted to defending and needed help from the rest
of the team. Joe Cole was one of them. “I think we showed a lot of
character,” said the man who supplied the passes to Lampard and Drogba
for the goals.

“We’ve all got responsibilities. They were pulling out wide left
a lot and I felt the job was a containment job and to catch them on
the break like we did.”

Chelsea’s second goal 12 minutes from time was the decisive moment.
Lampard drove a long ball into the left corner, Cole got there so far
ahead of Sagnol he had time to turn away, round and select a
right-footed cross, and Drogba nipped ahead of the defender and turned a
 wonderful header into the far corner of the goal.

“I heard Joe shout,” said Frank, “put him through, I thought he
did well in the corner, I thought he was going to hold it up for a
second and do nothing, but he curled it in and what made the goal
was Didier’s run and header. It was fantastic.”

At half-time a UEFA official asked to see under Rui Faria’s hat, and
it was no problem for him to prove that there were no secret devices
there. Chelsea released a formal statement afterwards saying: “Everybody
at the club would like to congratulate Jose Mourinho and the team on
a fantastic performance in reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“What we now want to do is put the events that led to Jose's touchline
ban, and any issues from the last two games, behind us and concentrate
on what will hopefully be a great end to the season. We are sure UEFA
would like to do the same.”
