Chelsea’s effort in developing fresh young talent was in evidence last night
as first year scholar Michael Mancienne captained England Under 17s to victory
over Italy.
Mancienne, who is 16 years-old, played in central defence as England scored two
second-half goals to run out 2-1 winners.
It was their first game of the Pepsi Under 17 International Tournament, being
held at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium and also involving teams from
Portugal and Russia. England are in action again on Friday and Sunday.
Mancienne played in the same tournament last season despite being a year
‘under-age’ and was watched last night by England senior coaches Sammy Lee
and Ray Clemence, as well as FA Director of Football Development Trevor
Brooking. He has played four times for Chelsea’s reserves.
