Two of the most promising newly promoted sides face off as Fiorentina make
their long-awaited top flight return to the Stadio Artemio Franchi. When they
played each other in Serie B last season it was a 2-1 home win with Christian
Rigano’s brace.
The Viola were hoping for at least a point away to injury-ravaged Roma, but the
rather foolish red card for William Viali in the opening minutes made it an
uphill struggle. The defender is suspended for this match, so Christian Maggio
should take his place.
There are also changes upfront, as Rigano limped off during the first half of
that 1-0 defeat with a torn thigh muscle and will be out of action for a month.
This paves the way for the glamorous front pairing of Fabrizio Miccoli and
Javier Portillo, with support provided by Martin Jorgensen, Hidetoshi Nakata
and Enzo Maresca.
Cagliari are brimming with confidence after their opening victory over Bologna,
but realise they’ll have to be more accurate in front of goal to earn more
secure results than 1-0. Gianfranco Zola has settled straight back into Serie A
and was inspirational as ever in last week’s game, while Honduras
international David Suazo will be fit enough to be in the starting XI.
