Ahead of Chelsea’s first home Champions League game of the season, striker
Eidur Gudjohnsen has spoken of his team’s twin-engined challenge for this
year’s big European honour.
While one motivating force is the determination to go further than last
season’s semi-final shortfall amongst those who remain from that squad, a
second source of power is the players and coaches who were crowned European
Champions and have since moved to Stamford Bridge.
“It is disappointing when you come close and don’t win any competition
whether it is the League or the Champions League,” Gudjohnsen reflected. “We
had a good season last year but just not good enough because we are a big team
and we are here to win trophies. That is what you are remembered for as a team
and as individuals.

“They are two different competitions and we came close to the Final of the
Champions League. If you ask me to choose one to win I’ll go for both,” he
smiled.

“We have both our manager’s experience and the players in the team that have
actually won the competition. They will obviously try to spread their winning
mentality into the team and experience like that is invaluable.

“We all had a taste of success in the Champions League last year, we got close
but not close enough and when we look back that is something we all regret as a

Looking more specifically at Wednesday night’s first ever competitive match
between Chelsea and a team from Portugal, Gudjohnsen had comments to make on
the opposition.
He said: “From what we have watched and from what the manager has told us
about Porto, they are collectively a good team, they have very dangerous
individuals but he has also told us that they are beatable.”

“It is simply a game of massive importance – three points in the Champions
League. We want to try to get as many points as early as possible because of
the amount of games coming up later on. You can understand there might be
different emotions for our management team but I think we all realise the
importance of the game itself.”

For the opening Champions League game in Paris, Jose Mourinho opted for both
Gudjohnsen and Didier Drogba in the attack although a head injury saw
Gudjohnsen leave the pitch before his colleague netted twice. Chelsea’s
longest-serving striker is looking for his first goal since the opening day of
the season against Man United.
“I hope over the duration of the season our understanding will become better,
” Gudjohnsen noted on his link-up with Drogba. “I can see us clicking very
well because we are both a different type of player. I’m usually the forward
who comes short to the ball and he is the player with the pace and power to get
behind defences.

“I hope to have a similar understanding going as I had with Jimmy Floyd

understanding and a bit more movement we can be very dangerous.

“As long as the team is playing well and we are winning then it doesn’t play

team-mates.”
