Chelsea new boy Tiago Mendes has withdrawn from Portugal's Olympic squad after
failing to shake off a recurring injury.

The summer signing from Benfica is struggling with a groin problem and he has
not been able to train with the Portugal side.

Tiago's initial inclusion in the squad had upset Chelsea as it would have meant

him missing the first few weeks of the season.

Portugal have now decided not to risk the player's fitness and he will not make

the trip to Athens.

"There was a worsening of an old injury and he will not recover in time so we
have decided to spare him," said Portugal team doctor Joao Resende.

The news is a blow to Portugal's hopes of success in Greece and they will hope
that injury doubt Helder Postiga will be fit to play.
