Kenyon Puts End To Chelsea Spending

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has confirmed his club's summer spending
spree is over.

New Blues boss Jose Mourinho has splashed out nearly ￡90million on seven new
players this summer.

But Kenyon says Mourinho now has the squad he wants and expects to challenge
Arsenal for the title when the Premiership season kicks off next week.

Kenyon said: "The cheque-book is closed primarily because the manager wants a
squad of 23 or 24 and that's what we've got.

"So I don't think there's any more need and I think the manager is happy with
the squad we have assembled before the start of the season."

Mourinho has wasted no time laying down the law since his arrival from European
champions Porto in the summer.

He has made clear what he wants - and even threatened to pull the plug on a ꈊG24million deal for Didier Drogba if a deal was not completed in time.

Meanwhile, he has cleared out some big-name players as he seeks to keep his
squad down to a manageable level.

And Kenyon believes he has snared the man who will prove to eclipse Arsene
Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson and become the best manager in the English game.

Kenyon told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme: "What is important is that
we have got probably the best manager in Europe.

"I think he will be here for a long time. I think it is about building for the
long-term, not just picking up a trophy this season.

"You've only got to listen to Jose himself. He's confident and we're confident
that during the term of his contract he will pick up some major titles, and he
has set himself an objective of winning the Premiership."
