LAMPARD: 'WE'RE READY' (節選)

Frank Lampard insisted Chelsea would be ready for their Barclays Premiership
opener at home to Manchester United on Sunday as he declared that the clash
could set the benchmark for the rest of the season. (上賽季也這樣說..結果..)

Chelsea's new boss, Jose Mourinho, has delayed any concentration on set-pieces
or detailed tactical work until this week as he has been blending his new
players together.

Lampard nevertheless believes Chelsea will hit the ground running as they look
to end their 50-year gap without the title

He said: "I've been thinking about this game since the fixture list first came
out in the summer. It's a great game, a great gauge of the season ahead of us.

"I know that nothing will be decided from this but, whoever wins, it will be a
great confidence-booster."

Mourinho put his squad through double training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday
before reducing the workload on Thursday and Friday as he concentrated on sep-
pieces and the final details.

"This week has been pretty intense in working on formations and tactics,
specific to Manchester United. We've got a couple more days left but we'll be
fully ready," Lampard told Chelsea TV.

"The manager hasn't had all the players fit and we've got so many players that
you're mixing teams about in training.

"But the main idea has been to get everyone accustomed to playing, so even if
they don't play for the first few weeks of the season, they will know what
they're doing when they do come in.

"This week has probably been different though as it looks like it's been
 players who might be playing in the game who are involved."

Mourinho, who outwitted Sir Alex Ferguson in the Champions League with Porto
last season, has a virtually fully-fit squad to choose from, with only
Arjen Robben and Tiago Mendes expected to be ruled out of Sunday's game.

Adrian Mutu, Wayne Bridge, Joe Cole and Alexei Smertin have returned to full
training after missing last weekend's tribute game for Gianfranco Zola.

Indeed, Smertin featured on the left flank in an apparent first-team line-up
in training yesterday, with Damien Duff, who could still start the game against
United, on the opposite side.

While Eidur Gudjohnsen and record signing Didier Drogba were up front, John
Terry and William Gallas were at the back along with Paolo Ferreira and Wayne
Bridge, while Petr Cech is hoping to start the season in goal.

"In the first-half against Real Zaragoza last weekend, I played on the left of
a three, with Duffer [Damien Duff] outside me, whereas in the second-half I
was in the hole," he said.

"I like playing there as it gives me licence to run in behind defenders and
link up with the front men to create chances.

"A player in that position has to have a final product, as well as doing the
work defensively."

Above all, however, Lampard is confident about Chelsea's prospects, as he
added: "We can challenge for everything this season - and that's what I want to
do."
