Handshake and new anthem for a new season
Friday, Aug 13, 2004
There will be a new look to the minutes just before kick-off this
Sunday and indeed for all Chelsea’s Premiership games both home and away.
Throughout the whole league this season players will line up for a
‘fair play’ handshake before every game accompanied by a specially
commissioned Premier League anthem.
The handshake will reiterate the importance of good behaviour on the
field of play and is indicative of the Premier League and its clubs’
desire to show the game in the best possible light.
This deed is being backed up by action with the season seeing the most
comprehensive programme of education, community and social inclusion
initiatives in football’s history.
After the teams enter the field of play to their traditional club
music they will break into two lines and, accompanied by the anthem, the
home team will pass down the away team shaking their hands, as well as
those of the match officials.
Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, has said of
innovation: “We are delighted to be kicking off the new season, and
indeed every game, with such a positive message about fair play and the
importance of projecting a positive image of the game.
“Those who work in football are in a privileged position – we see
the tremendous amount of good work that goes on at all our member clubs a
nd through Premier League run initiatives. The challenge now is to get that
message across to a wider audience.”
