Accolade for Ricardo

Ricardo Carvalho has been honoured by UEFA as the best defender playing
European football last season.
At the European Football Award ceremony in Monaco, which accompanies the
Champions League draw and Friday’s Super Cup match, Chelsea’s newest
centre-back won the Best Defender award ahead of fellow nominees Jorge Andrade
and Patrice Evra. Appropriately he was presented with the honour by the man he
replaced at Chelsea, Marcel Desailly.
Carvalho was also up for the overall Most Valuable Player honour but missed out
to Deco who in addition beat Frank Lampard in the midfielder section.
Porto’s success last season was further reflected by Vitor Baia collecting the
goalkeeping award while Fernando Morientes was chosen as Best Forward.
The awards, which are in their seventh year, draw their nominees from the teams
that progressed beyond the group stage of the Champions League.
