Terry: 'Europe Exit Hurts'
Wed 04 May, 6:09 PM
John Terry insists that even being crowned Barclays Premiership champions
does not ease Chelsea's pain at missing out on the Champions League final at
the last hurdle for a second season running.
Terry left the Anfield pitch in tears following the 1-0 defeat by Liverpool -
and admitted that the agony was even worse than being knocked out by Monaco
inthe semi-final a year ago.
The Chelsea skipper said: "We're gutted overall.
"We've reached the Champions League semi-final for the second year running and
not made the final.
"The fact that we've won the league doesn't make it better, in fact it's even
worse.
"Having been there last year we've come here again trying to avoid a similar
outcome and we've gone through the same emotions and same feelings of having
come so far and throwing it all away."
Terry believes time will heal the pain - and then Chelsea will realise what
achievements they have accomplished this season.
He added: "We're disappointed but overall for Chelsea it's been a great
season.
"This will put a downer on things for the next couple of days but we've still
won a cup and the Premiership.
"We threw it away because overall we're the better side and over the two legs
we just deserved it.
"We dominated the second half but just couldn't get a shot on goal."
Terry's words were echoed by team-mate Eidur Gudjohnsen, who nearly scored an
injury-time equaliser.
Gudjohnsen said: "It was even more disappointing than last year because we're a
better team and more mature.
"It was a bitter disappointment. We lacked width in the team and needed at
least one of the wingers to be fit to start the game.
"All the play went down the middle and Liverpool are strong there.
"In the second half when Arjen Robben came on you could see it was just what we
had lacked.
"I will keep going, I will be here for a good while yet. We've taken a big step
forward this season.
"We've won two trophies and will take another step forward next year. After
getting over this result we'll bounce back with a smile on our faces."
Meanwhile, Terry has confirmed he is likely to miss England's tour of the USA
later this month.
The central defender needs a minor operation on a toe injury and has already
told England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson that he may not be available for
the two matches against USA and Colombia on May 28 and 31 respectively.
Frank Lampard has the same problem - a hole in the skin which flares up - and
he too could also miss out unless, now that Chelsea are out of Europe and have
won the Premiership, both players decide to have the operation immediately and
have recovered in time.
Terry said: "I've already spoken to Mr Eriksson about that, I've definitely got
another operation in the summer.
"I've got to speak to the physios now so it might be a good time to get it
done now.
"We'll have to wait and see. I want to finish the season and hopefully I can
do that but definitely straight after I'll have to go in for the op."
England fly to the States on Tuesday May 24, meaning Carragher and Steven
Gerrard would have to join the tour party later as they will be playing in the
Champions League final in Istanbul the following night.
