Benni primed for Blues move

Porto star Benni McCarthy is in line for a move to Chelsea this
summer. It is understood the South African will be drafted in by Blues
coach Jose Mourinho over the coming months after being identified as a
prime target.
The 27-year-old has again hit double figures for Porto this season
and that included two goals against Chelsea - one in each of their UEFA
Champions League clashes with Porto earlier in the campaign.
Mourinho knows McCarthy well from his time at Porto and he is now
ready to bring him to England. Chelsea's hierarchy have not been keen to
deal with Mourinho's former club again, after signing Paulo Ferreira and
Ricardo Carvalho for what they deemed over zealous fees - but McCarthy
has a release clause of just ￡6 million and Porto could even let him
leave for less.
McCarthy saw a move to Middlesbrough collapse in 2001 because he
did not meet the work permit criteria, but he is now married to a Spanish
woman which enables him to play anywhere in the European Union without
any worries.
McCarthy's arrival would not have any bearing on a possible move for
Adriano - but the Porto's man signing would likely signal the end for
some of Chelsea's current crop of strikers.
Mateja Kezman looks set to depart after a disappointing season,
following his arrival from PSV Eindhoven, while youngsters Carlton Cole
and Mikael Forssell will also be worried about their long-term futures.
Should Chelsea decide to let Forssell leave then there would not be
a shortage of takers. Birmingham - the club Forssell has been on loan at
- and Portsmouth have already confirmed their interest and now Tottenham
look to have joined the race.
"Tottenham and others are interested in him," Pompey chairman Milan
Mandaric said of Forssell. "It's difficult to get big players but we're
working on it. He's quality and he knows the Premiership."
Birmingham chairman David Gold reiterated his side's desire to land
Forssell, but thinks they will miss out. "I am not optimistic about
getting Forssell back, I am a realist," said Gold. "I hope I am wrong
because we know what he did for us and what he could do again."
