Secret weapon for Hammers
West Ham could have found a secret weapon to help them beat Preston on Monday
- Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
The Hammers are one win away from securing a place in the Premiership next
season as they prepare to take on Billy Davies' team in the Championship
play-off final in a match worth about £20m to the victorious club.
As Alan Pardew's players prepared to practice on Friday for a possible
penalty shoot-out against Preston at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff,
they found the Czech Republic keeper - rather than their regular first-
choice James Walker - between the posts.
"I'm often in contact with (West Ham goalkeeping coach) Ludek Miklosko,"
explained Cech. "Chelsea's season has finished, but the Czech Republic have
two World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and FYR Macedonia coming up in June.
"So I spoke to Ludek and he said I could come to West Ham and train with them
to keep myself in shape for the international matches."
Cech was rated the Premiership's best goalkeeper by his fellow professionals,
as his excellent displays were a crucial factor in Chelsea's title triumph.
The 23-year-old revealed he had been impressed with the quality of West Ham's
penalty-taking, and he makes Pardew's side the favourites should the match
against Preston go the distance.
Cech continued: "During practice, the West Ham players seemed to be striking
their penalties very well and choosing well.
"If the game against Preston goes to penalties, I think they have a great
chance of winning.
"They have a lot of experience within their goalkeeping staff, so I didn't
need to give them any help.
"But I think James Walker has been one of the best keepers in the Championship
this season."
Cech also hinted, however, that the memory of last season's play-off final
defeat could weigh heavily on West Ham.
The Upton Park club were favourites against Crystal Palace in Cardiff last year
- as they are against Preston this time.
But West Ham played poorly and were forced to spend another season outside the
top flight after Neil Shipperley scored the only goal for the Eagles.
"The play-off final will be a big test for everybody here, because they lost
[to Crystal Palace at this stage] last year," Cech added.
"It will be good for the club and the supporters if they can get through this
game and they can enter the Premiership."
