Jose Mourinho has made a personal appeal to UEFA not to punish the fans of FC
Porto.
The Chelsea First Team Coach and Manager was spat at by an individual amongst
the Porto supporters before last night's UEFA Champions League match at
Stamford Bridge.
UEFA confirmed today that the incident had been mentioned in the report on the
game and that Porto were likely to face charges over the incident.
But in a letter written today to UEFA chief executive Lars Christer Olsson,
Mourinho has asked UEFA not to allow the good name of the Porto fans to be
tarnished by the action of one or two individuals.
"This was a minor incident compared to the fantastic reception I received from
the Porto fans. It would be a great shame if this very isolated incident was
allowed to ruin their previously excellent reputation for fairness," he wrote.
Three Porto fans were ejected from the ground before or during the game, the
first for the spitting incident and the other two for anti-social behaviour.
Mourinho had gone over to his former club's supporters during the pre-match
warm-up where he signed autographs and had pictures taken with the fans before
the incident occurred.
There is no suggestion that any action will be taken against Chelsea.
