Mourinho mulls over squad issues

Six Chelsea players have started every game this season so far whereas for
others it has been just the odd spot of action from the bench. Jose Mourinho
has been speaking about the spine of his team and those awaiting their chance,
including Scott Parker.


The players with all nine starts to their name are Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira,
John Terry, Claude Makelele, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.


“There you can see a goalkeeper, a central defender, a defensive midfield
player, an attacking midfield player and a striker. You can see right through
there is the column,” Mourinho pointed out.


“It doesn’t mean that I don’t trust other people. I can play Cudicini, I can
play another central defender - Gallas, Carvalho or both together or bring in
Robert Huth.


“I can bring another player in the Makelele position. I can change Drogba and
play Kezman or Gudjohnsen in the middle. It doesn’t mean that I don’t trust
other people. What it means in this stage of the season is nobody is tried.


“At this stage everybody can play three matches in a week no problem,” he
continued to explain. “We are not in December or January, we are almost in the
beginning of the season so players can play without problems.


“It is not necessary the same type of rotation I will do in December or
January or when we play together the Premiership, Champions League, Carling Cup
or FA Cup. I don’t need to do this type of thing.


“The left-back position I gave my confidence to Bridge and Babayaro and had a
rotation between them. I was happy with both but both became injured at the
same time so I had to use also Gallas in that position.



“The other man in midfield, I start the season with Geremi then Tiago comes
later in a very good condition. Then Smertin was training absolutely fantastic
and I decide to give him a chance and he played really well the last two games.
So I have rotated over this right midfield position.



“Then it was between Cole and Duff and between Kezman and Gudjohnsen and this
a squad. In the squad I trust everybody but there are a few players that not
just because of football qualities but also because of human qualities, you
feel you need them every time you can so I stick with them. But even in other
positions I’m not rotating so much. I am just using what I have.”



Mourinho was discussing the utilisation of his squad on the same day there were
press reports suggesting that there is a possibility of a move back to Charlton
for Scott Parker. The 23 year-old midfielder has appeared just once this season
so far, coming on as a substitute in the opening day against Man United.



The Chelsea manager pointed out: “I have a lot of midfield players and no-one
is injured. I have two left-backs with problems, I have a left winger with
problems but I have every single midfielder. Everybody is ready – Makelele,
Smertin, Tiago, Parker, Geremi, Lampard. I can use just three and have one more
on the bench because in our league you can have only five, not seven like the
Champions League.



“So somebody has to be out. At the moment Scott Parker has been involved with
me almost every match in the squad but not in the line-up and not many times
sub. I can understand, accept and in fact I am happy because the player is not
happy.



“If one player is not being used many times and he is happy it is because he
has no ambition, no motivation. So I am happy because Scott is probably feeling
unhappy he is not playing. But what I have to say also is he is a top
professional. He is working every day absolutely fantastic and his chance will
arrive.”



On the stories that a transfer may be a possibility, Mourinho added: “Anything
can be in the press about it but the market is closed. Imagine if in November
or December Scott is a line-up player regularly. He won’t want to leave
Chelsea for sure. 



“I think it is completely out of context. It is too early, we are in September
and we don’t know what is happening in October, November or December so we
have to wait.



“I said in pre-season that I don’t like to have players who are not happy. I
want the players to feel motivation to be here. So if we arrive in late
December and there is any player like that then we can speak about it. I’m not
saying yes, I am saying we can speak about it - but at this moment it is too
early.



“No-one from Charlton has spoken to us, Scott hasn’t spoken to me or anyone
at the club and the way I see him work every day, even unhappy and I can
understand that, he keeps his motivation and his fantastic professional
behaviour. 



“I had one incredible conversation with him before we played at Aston Villa.
I was saying to him that Makelele was playing in the Faroe Islands with France,
we then play Aston Villa and three days later we play in Paris. So I said to
him if Makelele plays against Faroe Islands for 90 minutes, you play in the
line-up against Villa. This was one day before France play.



“The next day Makelele left the French national team. He played against Israel
and he was not very happy because all the big guys like Zidane, Lizarazu and
Desailly were leaving and he was thinking I don’t feel comfortable here, it is
the time for young people. So Makelele the next day called me and said he will
not be going to Faroe Islands.



“From this conversation Scott knows I trust him and it is just a question of
the moment. Smertin was not selected in Paris, he was out of the 18. I felt the
boy was very sad. The next Champions League game, against Porto, he play in the
line-up, scores a goal and was one of the best players on the pitch. This is
football at big teams. In big teams things change.”
