Terry and King grind no axe from the bench
Daniel Taylor Saturday October 9, 2004
Telling a player that he has been dropped is probably the hardest part of
a manager's job but, in the case of John Terry and Ledley King, Sven-Goran
Eriksson can at least count on both centre-halves accepting his decision.
With Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell available again, Terry and King know
they will be substitutes today but neither plans to make a fuss.
"The initial reaction will be of disappointment at not playing for my
country," said Terry. "But I'm not one of those people who will whinge. I
have got two of the best centre-halves in the world in front of me - and I
firmly believe that."
"I feel like I'm playing as well as any other defender in the country," added
King. "However, there's also a thing about experience. Rio and Sol have both
got great experience and I can't argue with that."
They can both console themselves with the knowledge that they have excelled
in the absence of Ferdinand, through suspension, and Campbell, through injury.
Terry has played in 12 of the last 15 internationals and King has been one of
England's best performers in his five appearances during and after Euro 2004.
Eriksson will be equally charmed by their impressive reaction to being left
out. There have been no tantrums, no mutinous statements and not even a hint
of discord.
"As far as I'm concerned, Rio's the best central defender in the world and
it's great for England to have him back," said Terry. "Even now I still watch
videos of Rio and, when he's playing in a televised match, I'll stay in to see
it. I tend to watch him and only him.
It's the same with Sol if Arsenal are on the television. I believe I can
learn from them and in training, if we are doing defensive work, they are the
two players I look up to."
King was equally pragmatic. "Every player wants to play but I'm still quite
inex perienced at this level. When you have got players like Rio and Sol
coming back, it's going to be difficult to stay in the team.
"The important thing is that I feel part of the squad now. I've shown that I
won't let anyone down and that they can count on me in the future."
