Fifa give goal to Lampard


Frank Lampard was tonight officially credited with England's first goal in
their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win against Wales.


The Football Association contacted FIFA for clarification as Michael Owen
technically had the last touch as the ball deflected off him into the net
for England's opening goal at Old Trafford.


FA Head of Media Adrian Bevington revealed: 'FIFA asked the referee and
their of ficial match delegate to review a video of the goal and they have
awarded it to Frank Lampard.


'They decided the ball had hit Michael Owen rather than him getting a
deliberate touch on Frank Lampard's shot.'


Lampard and Owen had both claimed the goal after the game but FIFA have
tonight ruled in Lampard's favour.

Lampard's drive was deflected into the net unwittingly by Owen's heel but
the Real Madrid striker said on BBC1: 'Frank is standing by me so I don't
want an argument but initially I thought it just hit me and went more or
less in the same path. Having seen it again it has taken quite a big
deflection.
