The player himself shrugged off the incident but, on a night when he ended one sequence, there was a depressing repetition of the violence that had marred this competition elsewhere in London on the previous night. With Millwall and Liverpool fans still debating the cause of the unpleasantness at the League Cup tie at the New Den on Tuesday, the crowd scenes at Stamford Bridge provided more cause for regret. Kezman was struck as Frank Lampard waited to take — and miss — a 78th-minute penalty that would have increased Chelsea’s lead and, after the final whistle, a handful of West Ham fans fought police near the perimeter wall amid claims that rival supporters had hurled objects at them from above. A child was hurt amid the crush and police reported 11 arrests inside the ground for offenses relating to public order, weapons and drugs. Kezman was struck, possibly by a coin, at the same time as plastic bottles appeared to be thrown on to the pitch but the striker was unwilling to discuss the matter. “It’s just a small accident,” he said. “I’m not sure what happened. I’m fine.” Kezman was able to return to the pitch after treatment and did not require stitches, and it is understandable that he would not want attention to be deflected from a game in which he at last achieved what he could do in his sleep at PSV Eindhoven. A prolific goalscorer in the Netherlands, he has struggled badly on his introduction to the Premiership but he broke his duck with a sharp finish just before the hour mark. “I had lost my confidence a bit but the lads were one thousand per cent behind me,” Kezman said, although his colleagues must have despaired when he missed two good chances in the first half. Having earlier been denied by a fine stop by Jim Walker, West Ham’s inspired reserve goalkeeper, he had no such excuse when Joe Cole sent him clear. After knocking the ball one side of Walker while running round the other, he was closed down by the defence. “He had a few chances in the first half and didn’t take them, but he didn’t hide,” Steve Clarke, the Chelsea assistant manager, said. “He was still positive at half-time.” Shortly after the break Kezman stole the ball from Anton Ferdinand but saw his drive kept out brilliantly by Walker. Then, in the 57th minute, he collected a through pass from Cole and rolled the ball in off the post, just about the only place that Walker could not reach. The point was emphasised when Walker saved Lampard’s penalty with his legs after Tomas Repka had felled Arjen Robben. Chelsea will have cause to be grateful for Kezman’s newfound form after it was reported last night that Adrian Mutu had been handed an FA charge and suspended by the club in the wake of his admitting to taking drugs after failing a test.
