Terry pays tribute to Blues
Chelsea skipper John Terry today paid tribute to the rest of the Chelsea squad
for refusing to whinge about being left out of the team.
Manager Jose Mourinho made very few changes during the club's first nine games
of the season - a policy that has pushed Chelsea to within just two points of
the Barclays Premiership summit.
But now squad rotation has finally arrived at Stamford Bridge with Mourinho
ringing the changes against Blackburn last Saturday and West Ham in the
Carling Cuplast night.
The Chelsea chief will understandably recall some of the first team regulars
he omitted from the side that earned them a fourth round tie against Newcastle
and that decision will spell more for disappointment for some of those
individuals who were finally given a taste of competitive action.
Players like Scott Parker and even the impressive Joe Cole have been forced to
take a back seat for much of the season as Mourinho refused to tinker too much
with his formations or line-ups.
The reason, says Mourinho, was the need to get off to a flying start in his
first season in charge in West London.
That aim has now been achieved with Chelsea just two points behind Arsenal at
the top.
However, they now face their third game in a week and a Champions League clash
in Moscow against CSKA next Tuesday night.
The expensively-assembled squad will be put to the test again during their
forth coming games and that will inevitably lead to more frustration for some.
However, the way the fringe members of Mourinho's squad have conducted
themselves so far this season has made a big impression on skipper Terry.
In previous year's squad rotation has always ended with the inevitable whining
from those disgruntled players who feel they deserve to be selected for every
game.
But this year the silence has been deafening with only Scott Parker making a
few, minor moans, about watching his England chances disappear by failing to
play regular first team football.
So Terry has every right to be proud of the harmonious spirit within the camp.
He said: "The important thing this year is that the players haven't been
whining, whoever they are, and I'm very proud of this. It's been hard for
those who haven't played but they've kept their heads down and got on well
in training.
"The lads who came in on Saturday were determined to play well and by doing
that they've given the manager a good problem.
"Glen and Scott had their first starts of the season and you could see how
hungry they were. They did so well and worked fantastically. "Scott showed
how much it means to him to be fighting for a place at Chelsea." Terry himself
was the victim of Mourinho's rotational policy against the Hammers but, like
the rest of the squad, he's not going to start complaining.
Terry added: "I'd prefer to be playing but I understand. I'd played in every
game so far and we've got good cover."While the majority of the Chelsea
players have been left out when they've been fully fit, Arjen Robben's case
has been the total opposite.
The Dutchman was sidelined for the opening nine games with an ankle injury
sustained in pre-season but he's been a revelation since completing his
recovery.
His return to fitness brought him a deserved first start against West Ham
after terrorising Lucas Neill as a second-half substitute against Blackburn.
It was Robben who was felled by Tomas Repka for Chelsea's penalty against
Alan Pardew's side on Wednesday night and although Lampard missed the
spot-kick, Terry is full of praise for their latest hero.
He added: "Against Blackburn we got our first viewing of Arjen. He was
unbelievable.
"Normally if you come on, the first thing you try and do is a simple
five-yard pass.
"But Arjen got the ball and straight away went round someone. He kept on
doing that time after time."
