Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren believed the high concentration of
fixtures (one more than is usual over this period) proved as big an
opponent to his team than any player in blue.
He said: “I can’t fault my players. Four games in ten days, I’ve
said it before and I’ll repeat it now, is absolutely ridiculous and
unless you have got a big squad to cope with that, it is going to
difficult.
“We were two down after 17 minutes to a very good side but the players
kept going and I was proud of the way they never gave up.”
It was a night when events at Stamford Bridge could not be looked at
in isolation; not when both Arsenal and Man United were dropping two
points as Chelsea collected three. That lead some to say already that the
title is now Chelsea’s to lose, including McClaren.
“There are three teams that are going to run away with it,” he
believes. “Chelsea know they can’t say seven points, that’s it because
at the moment they have not had injuries to key players.
“The likes of Arsenal and Man United have and coped with it and if
that happens to Chelsea then those teams will be waiting behind. But it is
Chelsea’s to lose. Everybody else has to keep going but it is still a
three horse race.”
