Chelsea triumph on and off pitch

From the moment that they arrived at Stamford Bridge five hours before
kick-off to the moment they left clutching their treasured mementos,
along with the warm glow of a valiant, unlucky, 3-1 defeat, Scunthorpe’s
players were given what Cleveland Taylor, the man who might have won it
for the Coca-Cola League Two side, described as “a taste of what it’s
like at the top of the league instead of the bottom — they really looked
after us”.
Paul Hayes, the Scunthorpe goalscorer, concurred. “Jose Mourinho and
his players have been a credit. They were fantastic,” he said. “We
were shown round the ground and invited into their dressing-room, and
shirts and autographs were laid on. It was very much appreciated.”
With Wayne Bridge’s top to take home rather than Arjen Robben’s,
Taylor might consider himself especially unlucky. (Hayes, by contrast,
got Joe Cole’s.) It was Taylor’s miss at 2-1 down, shortly after his
arrival as a substitute, that was one of the pivotal moments of a
captivating afternoon. Glory, or at least a replay, beckoned; instead
he found only Carlo Cudicini’s fingertips after shooting too close to
the Chelsea goalkeeper when perfectly placed. When Taylor’s header
then bounced to safety off Cudicini’s left-hand post six minutes
later, Scunthorpe must have known that their chance had gone.
Instead of a shirt, Brian Laws, the Scunthorpe manager, had to make do
with the dossier that Mourinho had compiled on his team, but that did
nothing to detract from his pride in Scunthorpe’s performance or his
admiration for his opposite number. Having spent much of his playing
career under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest, Laws is well-placed to
assess Mourinho’s undoubted qualities. His verdict was flattering.
