CHELSEA FANS SALUTE UNITED
12:30 - 12 January 2005
Chelsea fans have taken Scunthorpe United to their hearts following
Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at Stamford Bridge.
The Iron might have lost the game 3-1, after leading in the eighth
minute through Paul Hayes - but they have won a lot of new friends
with their performance. It was not just Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho
who was taken aback by the quality of the Iron's display against
the runaway Premiership leaders.
Since the game United have been inundated with messages of
congratulations from Blues' fans themselves.
Below is a sample of their views from t he pride of London to the
pride of North Lincolnshire - including one from Paul Musselwhite,
a namesake of the Iron 'keeper!
Paul Finch: As a Chelsea supporter I would just like to congratulate
Scunthorpe on a great game.
At times the spectre of 1988 kept looming in front of me.
You were very unlucky on the day and I can only wish you great success
in your quest for promotion.
Paul Musselwhite: Hi, my name is Paul Musselwhite. I have been a Chelsea
fan since 1967.
I'm 50 this year and when I saw Paul in the game on Saturday I must
admit my support went a little way to Scunthorpe.
I am glad to share the name with such a gutsy player.
From three hardened Chelsea supporters; Dave, Freda & Jon: Well done
Scunthorpe - you were unlucky. Your guys did their best and we
certainly knew it!
Hope you all welcome your team back in the manner they deserve.
Thanks for the experience.
Graham King: I'm a Blue and was at the game on Saturday.
Your team and fans were a great credit to the club and I for one
would not have complained had you earned a replay.
My son and I also remained to applaud your team and supporters. It
was the least we could do in recognition of your performance.
Good luck for promotion, hopefully your display against us will
inspire you to achieve your ambitions.
Michelle Brand: I'm a Chelsea fan but I'd like to give your team and
your fans the credit they deserve.
Both were great and the scoreline did not reflect the game at all.
You should of had a draw.
Good luck for the rest of the season and if your team and fans perform
like that every weak you're sure to get promotion.
Jon Hawkins: Well done Scunny! As a lifelong, loyal Chelsea supporter
I can honestly say I was impressed with all of you.
Your support was magnificent - out singing us for much of the game -
your players played fantastically, better than several Premiership sides
have managed this season.
They played good football - not the kick and rush that we, probably
mistakenly, expect from the lower divisions.
Those of us who stayed on a while applauding were doing it for the
efforts of your players and the efforts of you, the grass roots
supporters who make the game what it is.
Good luck in your promotion push fellas, I think there's a few Blues
fans who'll be looking out for your results.
Tony Grinney: I'm a Chelsea fan and I wish to offer my warmest
congratulations to Scunthorpe for a fantastic performance at the Bridge.
You gave us an uncomfortable time for a long period of the game.
It is easy to be magnanimous after a victory, but it isn't this the
joy of the FA Cup? That lower division sides play out of their skins
and give the top division sides the fright of their lives.
Not surprising that the whole of the stadium gave Scunthorpe a standing
ovation at the end of the game!
Well done to the Irons from a Chelsea season ticket holder: I've seen
several Premiership teams at Stamford Bridge with less ambition than
your boys showed.
I was one of the many Chelsea fans who stayed behind to applaud your
team for their efforts.
I'll keep an eye on your league results. Good luck with your promotion
effort.
Wish us luck in our efforts to win the title for the first time in 50
years. We know what it's like to suffer!
Richard Williams: You outsung us Blues fans for 90 minutes and put us
to shame.
You didn't play too bad either, and 3-1 was never a true reflection
of that.
Keep cheering the Iron on like that and promotion will be easy as it
will be like having a 12th man on the pitch!
